Dan
Portugal was born in Uruguay. His parents relocated to Peru and then moved
to Spain where he lived for 12 years. In 1986 he came to the US and
completed undergraduate and graduate work in WV, MD, and SC. Since he earned
an M.A. in TEFL
in 1994, Dan has taught English as a Second Language to Europeans, Asians,
Latin Americans, and Africans.
His experience as an ESL
Instructor includes teaching young adult learners in a variety of different
settings such as IEP
schools, engineer corporations, and adult immigrant education.
In the mid 90’s, and while
teaching English in EFL
schools and corporations in Barcelona Spain, Dan also tutored CEOs,
engineers, and high school students.
Dan joined Agape English Language
Institute, Greenville, SC in June of 1999. He has served as an ESL
Instructor and Associate Director. In 2001 he was promoted to his current
position as General Director. He administers the program in 3 cities,
recruits and supervises staff, trains teachers, acts as liaison to college
and community, and has contributed to developing and updating curriculum and
standards.
Dan has always loved language and
language learning throughout his life. He has majored in Greek and Hebrew
and, besides English he also speaks Spanish and Catalan. He has also studied
French. Other related experience includes his work as a translator, reviser,
and interpreter which he continues to do on a small scale through Agape.
Dan has lived and traveled in
Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the USA. He enjoys meeting people from
different countries. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing the guitar
and singing, taking pictures, and spending time with his wife and two
daughters.
In 1990 Dan married Amy in Grand
Rapids, MI. They have two children: Kayla Joy (age 8) and Naomi Faith (age
1).
